JESS JOHNSON DIES OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN FALL BENEATH TRAIN
Funeral arrangements had not been announced at a late hour Monday for Jess Johnson, 57, who died early Monday morning from injuries received when he fell beneath a Denver and Rio Grande freight train at the State Avenue railroad crossing and was badly mangled.
The accident occurred at 5:15 Sunday afternoon. The freight stood across the street intersection by the depot, and Johnson attempted to go between two of the cars by climbing over the coupling. At that moment, the train lurched as the crew started to break for the crossing. Johnson lost his hold and fell to the track. His left leg was crushed just below the knee, being nearly severed; while the right leg was crushed and mangled clear to the hip. At the Alamosa Community hospital, the amputations were completed and Johnson rallied well at first, but during the night severe shock set in and he died about 7 am.
