Israel Barlow III Mission and Mobs

Contributor: Mle_mitton Created: 3 years ago Updated: 3 years ago

(In the fall of 1886 Israel Barlow III was called to the Southern States Mission. Just before he had been called to serve, two missionaries had been killed in that mission and he notes that, “There was a very bitter feeling against the Mormons all over the South.” Once in his mission Israel was assigned to the Mississippi Conference. He reports on this incident:) [Elder Ruby and I] started for a quiet, secluded spot in the woods where we repaired daily for prayer. [We] had only gone a couple of rods, [when] on looking to the east [I] saw two or three men each behind a tree with a gun. In a flash I took in the situation. I yelled out, “Run, Brother Ruby, run!” . . . On we went, [chased by] men afoot, some [on] horseback, all with guns, [and a couple of big bloodhounds. They were yelling, “sic ‘em, sic, ‘em” [to the dogs]. When they reached us we yelled, “sic ‘em, sic ‘em,” so on they went thinking they were after something else. We passed through a herd of neighborhood milk cows, each had a bell on. Soon they were running in all directions. They cows were so frightened that some didn’t get . . . back home to milk for two days. We reached a big open fenced field. On we went to the center where we came to a big dry creek, overgrown with briers and underbrush. For a moment we thought it best for one to run up, the other down. We said, no, we’ll stay together. If one gets whipped the other will, if one is killed the other will be. So we shot through across the field, only to meet the mob who had gone around. Some [had] big long willows in their hand, and others with guns cocked and pointed at us. They said, “halt.” We obeyed willingly because we had to. They marched us some five miles to an old logging camp that had two or three old frame shacks. [They stopped] there to decide whether to whip, kill, [or] what to do with us. Many were part drunk. A few of the more sober, thoughtful and wise, reasoned this way: if these boys are killed we may lose our lives. So [they] decided to arrange for us to get away. Israel Barlow III

Journal Entry Excerpt: 1869-70

“In the winter of 1869-70 father and Uncle Dave Thompson and families were called to go and help settle the Dixie country. “It was wild and wooly [then]. Infested by roving bands of Indians. As soon as they could make the necessary arrangements, and the weather suitable, they started. It was a trip of 365 miles. In those days of poor roads it required from three to five weeks. “On arriving at Panaca, Nevada father rented a small one-roomed sod house. Mother had a small baby, Clara, just younger than my sister Pamelia. She was taken with the summer complaint. With poor water, no medicine, lack of conveniences she gradually grew worse. Soon passed away. Mother took it to heart so, that father was under the necessity of moving her back to Bountiful for a time, to save her life. “This sod house was located just across the street from the only hotel in the town. How well I can remember seeing the old stage coach come in, carrying mail and passengers, drawn by four horses galloping just as fast as they could go, covered with lather, the sweat running of them almost in a stream. Horses and driver was changed in a few minutes. On their way to Pioche and other towns."

The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
