Memories of my grandmother Ida Marie Hansen Fackrell by Kanin Barrus Butler. When Ida was about 41 or 42 years of age, she got breast cancer. She had to have a radical masectomy in which they removed her breast. This was a new and radical thing of her day! This was a difficult thing for her. She was so sad to lose the breast. She worried her husband wouldn't love her any more and all the other fears that go with that surgery. The surgery was successful. The cancer removed. After her surgery, She lay in the bed not wanting to live! Her mother (Ethel Ida Gray) who was dead, came to her and stood at the end of her bed. She called her by name and said "Ida, get up out of that bed, you have a family to raise!" Soon after that she recovered. She lived almost another 40 years before losing the second breast to cancer and then got lymphoma two years after that! I think my grandma was a very brave woman!

Memories ( verbal history) by Kanin Barrus Butler

My mother, Marilyn, said one of her favorite memories was the smell of her mother's perfume as she (Ida) passed her (Marilyn's) bedroom at night on her way to bed. Marilyn's room was on the path between the two rooms. She said her mother, Ida, always took the time to freshen up, or clean up, before she went to bed. Her marriage was important to her and she believed in keeping romance alive. Marilyn said she always smelled so good, whether with lotion, perfume, or soap, her sweet smell was a great memory for my mother, and a good example to the rising generations, to take care of yourself, but especially for your sweetheart. Ida loved Monde very much. (Her daughter-in-law Marcia commented, "they always had a twinkle in their eyes, for each other, whenever thet looked at each other".) Ida's favorite perfume was White Shoulders! She had several beautiful bottles, of various fragrances on her dresser. One day when Guy (Ida's grandson, Marilyn's son) was about two years old, he got into his grandmother (Ida's) perfume, and drank her White Shoulders. He was fine, but grandma Ida wasn't very happy, ( It wasn't a cheap fragrance) and she really never let him live it down. Ida loved modern things and tried to stay fashionable and beautiful or at least looking nice for Monde and an example for her children. Cleanliness, and neatness were important to her. She loved to sew and made many beautiful dresses and clothes for her grandchildren. Easter was her favorite holiday. She so believed in Christ and made that day a real celebration. Many of our Easter Traditions came from her. She made sure it was a special day, from a deluxe outfit to wear to church, to a fine meal, to an Easter egg hunt with baskets and treats for everyone, including the adults. She wanted it to be a special day, and it was! Ida always worried about her looks, and her children said she must have tried every conceivable diet, but to us, and her husband, she was the most beautiful women in the world! She was a Relief Society President and served well. I still have a necklace that the ladies learned how to crochet of tiny pearl like beads sewen together into a rope like strand, at a homemaking ( middle of the week) activity. (Ida liked jewlery-and this was a popular activity at the time). I suppose her greatest act of compassionate service and blessing from serving was this, but I am sure there was more. Paulette's mother was dying and so she and Monde took Paulette into their home and cared for her till her mother passed. Then, they adopted her and raised her as their own, and loved her very much!

Ida Marie Fackrell was 24 years old when World War II: The Imperial Japanese Navy made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, intending to neutralize the United States Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.

Ida Marie Fackrell was 72 years old when Cold War: Fall of the Berlin Wall: East Germany opens checkpoints in the Berlin Wall, allowing its citizens to travel to West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic, starting on 13 August 1961, the Wall cut off West Berlin from virtually all of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and finished in 1992. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc portrayed the Wall as protecting its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany.
