Life Sketch of Johanne Catherine Jensen

04/17/2018
Johanne Catherine Jensen, Wife of Hans Christensen This sketch has been compiled from the family record, the ward historical record, from pioneer records, and from the Richfield Reaper by Katie Beecher, great- grand-daughter of Johanne Catherine Jensen Christensen. Johanne Catherine was born in Granholt, Flade, Hjorring, Denmark on June 26, 1857. She was the daughter of Jens Christian Jensen from Aasted, and Christine Jensen from Granholt, Denmark. Johanne had three sisters, Ane Kirstine, the oldest, was born December 20, 1849; Caroline was born May 3, 1854; Johanne was third; and Christine was born June 21, 1860. Johanne’s father was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1872, then Johanne in 1875, and her sister Ane Kirstine in 1879. Her mother and other sisters were not baptized while they were living, but their work has been done by proxy. Johanne had only been a member of the church about three months, and was eighteen years old when she emigrated with the Saints to Utah on the steamship Idaho. They sailed from Liverpool, England on June 30, 1875, and arrived in the United States on July 14, 1875. Their company then continued their journey by rail under Captain Chr. G. Larsen. They arrived in Salt Lake City on July 22, 1875. She lived in Pleasant Grove for a while before moving to Richfield. Johanne was sealed to Hans Christensen as his second wife on July 17, 1876 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. They made their home in Richfield. Their first child, Christine Marie, was born March 4, 1878, and died seven months later from the croup. Henry Ludwig was born November 23, 1879. He married Louise Mortensen on June 19, 1918, and he died on August 21, 1958. James Leo was born November 25, 1881. He married Rachel Gardner on August 23, 1927, and died three years later on June 30 1930. Clarence Hope was born March 22, 1884. He married Clara Fillmore February 16, 1910, and died October 25, 1936. He and his wife settled in Idaho. Leonard Benjamin was born April 11, 1886. He married Beatrice Gray November 24, 1915 and died March 19, 1972. The second daughter Elnora was born September 25, 1888. Elnora was never married, but had two sons, Nephi and Albert. Nephi was born on May 23, 1905 and died the same day. Albert was born January 17, 1907 and died January 21, 1907. Elnora died shortly after on February 15, 1907. Elnora’s sons have been sealed to Hans and Johanne. Arthur Orlando was born on October 24, 1893. He married Ethel Clarey Beckstead on April 5, 1916, and died April 6, 1959. The last son, Ervin Moroni, was born February 9, 1898. He married Emily LaVee Anderson June 8, 1935, and died April 6, 1959. Johanne died on February 21, 1920. The Richfield Reaper reported that she died of general debility and noted that she passed away on Hans’ 80th birthday. They also reported that she was a modest, unassuming lady who did not take part in public affairs, devoting her life entirely to her family.
