Helga Olsen

Helga (known as Ole to most who knew her) was the 7th child born to Christian, who was 33, and Bertha Marie, who was 37 at the time of her birth. She was born in Coleville, Utah, the last of her siblings to be born in Coleville. The last 2 children were born in Salt Lake City. Helga was sealed to her parents when she was 7 years old. She was baptized when she was 8. Helga never married, and lived out her life in the house that her parents owned, in SLC, Sugarhouse, on 8th East and about 2300 South. It was always fun to go to Ole's house. She always had treats for us, and every Sunday for years she made a cake for us for our Sunday dinner. She always wanted Gordon, who was her special nephew, to come over after Church to pick up the cake. The exterior of the house still looks the same now as it did in my childhood. I haven't been inside for many years. My favorite memory of Ole's house is the huge picture that Grandpa Olsen painted, which hung in the living room on the South wall. It was almost as big as the wall. For many years Ole worked in ZCMI in downtown SLC. I used to go in and visit her on the top floor, where she worked in an office and had a window looking North, toward Hotel Utah. I don't remember Ole ever driving a car. She would walk up to 9th East and Ashton Ave. to catch a bus. We had some wonderful times with Ole after she moved into George & Lucile's house when she got Alzheimers Disease. We aren't real proud of the way we acted sometimes, but she always kept us entertained. Ole was endowed when she was 63 years old. She died in a care center in SLC when she was 81 years old. She is buried in Wasatch Lawn Cemetary in SLC.

Helga Olsen, 81, 843 Parkway Avenue, died October 3, 1972, in a local nursing home of natural causes. Born October 1, 1891, Coalville, Summit County, to Christian M. and Bertha Marie Hansen. Retired employee, ZCMI Department Store; member LDS church. Survivor: Mrs. Agnes VanDuren, Salt Lake City. Funeral Saturday, 2 p.m., 260 East South Temple, where friends can call Friday 6-8 p.m. and Saturday one hour before services. Burial, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park
