SHOOTING TRAGEDY EX SOLDIER TAKES LIFE
A single man named George Henry Sydney Sydenham Engall, aged 44 years, of Totara Flats, on the Te Wharau Road, near Tyneside, was found yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, outside his motor shed, in a unconscious condition, with a pea rifle lying alongside. He expired half an hour later, before the arrival of Dr Archer Hosking, of Masterton, who was summoned. Deceased, who was a soldier settler, had resided on the property with his widowed mother and a farm hand for nearly ten years. He was a member of the main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and served throughout the war, seeing service at Gallipoli and in France. He was twice wounded, The late Mr Engall was an only son.
An inquest was held yesterday before
The funeral took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon of the late Mr George Engall of Westmere, who met his death on Sunday morning. There was a large attendance of mourners, including many residents of the district in which he resided. The pall bearers were returned soldiers, deceased having served throughout the Great War. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev W. Bullock.
