Headstone Description

Section T Lot 97, 101 1881-01-07; Paper: Philadelphia Inquirer "DEATH OF MR. JOSIAH RIEGEL Mr. Josiah Riegel, the head of the well-known house of Riegel, Scott & Co., dry goods importers and jobbers, No. 333 Market street, died about one o'clock yesterday. Mr. Riegel was born at Hellertown, Northampton county, PA, in 1830, and came to this [city] about thirty-one years ago, entering the employ of Riegel & Bro., dry goods jobbers and retailers on Second street, near Callowhill. About the year 1851 he became connected with the house of Sieger, Lamb & Co., on North Third street, and was admitted as a partner in the house of Riegel, Baird & Co., on North Third street, their successors, in 1858. From that time to the present he has been identified with the dry goods jobbing business of this city, and has been well and favorably known for his ability, integrity and energy, both as a salesman and as a merchant. On Tuesday last he was attacked with apoplexy at his place of business, and after lingering for two days passed away. He leaves a widow and two children to mourn his loss. He will be very much missed in mercantile circles, and his sudden demise universally regretted by those with whom he was accustomed to transact business. As if by a strange coincidence, Mr. Riegel was taken ill on the first annivesrary of his brother Jacob's death. The trade of the house of which Mr. Reigel was the head amounts to over $3,000,000 annually, and passed through all the panics unscathed. To show Mr. Reigel's tireless energy and application to business it is stated that during the busy seasons of spring and fall he would be at the hotels as early as six o'clock in the morning to meet his customers and take them to his place of business. Mr. Reigel was a director in the Saucon Iron Company, and also was interested in the True Blue Slate Company, in Northampton county, Pa. The funeral will take place on Monday, at twelve o'clock/"
