Fritz emigrated to New Zealand when a young man, arriving on the West Coast in 1864. He spent 34 years on the Coast, chiefly at Greymouth, where he carried on an extensive jewellery business, and he was one of the leading public men of the time. In 1884 he was Mayor of Greymouth and he at various times was a member of the Borough Council, Harbour Board, Hospital Trustees, and Building Society, filling such public positions with honour and ability and gaining the respect of the whole community. He was also associated with many of the mining enterprises on the Coast. Eight years ago he came to Masterton with his family and after being in business in Masterton for a time, went to Carterton.

He leaves a widow and family of five, two sons and three daughters, who will have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
