"Grandpa Johnson lived in Portland, Oregon during the 1930's (1934 for sure) at 2224 S.E. Sherman. I believed he owned the home as he wrote about it getting it ready to sell. From letters (that have now been burned by me) he talked about working in his garden. Grandmother mentioned that he had done a lot of planting. i guess that was where my mother (Grace) got her love of planting flowers and vegetables. Grandpa loved to go dancing whenever he was in SLC. It was mentioned in the letters that it was twice or three times a week. A placed called Jackson, mostly, and the Coconut Grove. " "Grandpa was "Assistant Registrar" for the American Extension University, Los Angeles, California, with his office at 303 Railway Exchange Building in Portland. It was "Lessons in Law for Busy Business Men" and had extensions, evidently in LA, Chicago and New York. One of his letters was dated April 26th, 1926 (I saved this letter), so he was evidently there in the 1920's, as well. (He would have been 61 years old at that time.) I think he liked to travel and really don't think he stayed at home very often. One letter from Grandmother in July 1934 was from Portland. (I saved this letter). She was evidently visiting him for several months, but appeared to be very lonely for home. He signed himself "Father" mostly, but also "Daddy" and "Daddie".

Frank Carlton Johnson was 18 years old when Eruption of Krakatoa: Four enormous explosions destroy the island of Krakatoa and cause years of climate change. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Dutch East Indies began in the afternoon of Sunday, 26 August 1883, and peaked in the late morning of Monday, 27 August when over 70% of the island and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed as it collapsed into a caldera. Additional seismic activity was reported to have continued until February 1884, though reports of seismic activity after October 1883 were later dismissed by Rogier Verbeek's investigation into the eruption. The 1883 eruption was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. At least 36,417 deaths are attributed to the eruption and the tsunamis it created. Significant additional effects were also felt around the world in the days and weeks after the volcano's eruption.

Frank Carlton Johnson was 74 years old when World War II: Nazi Germany and Slovakia invade Poland, beginning the European phase of World War II. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
