Naomi Vance Atterton by her daughter Laraine (my grandma)

Contributor: trishkovach Created: 2 years ago Updated: 2 years ago

My grandmother came from the Salt Lake City area to bring me a large box of family history documents, family photos, and books of remembrance. We spent over an hour going through all of the materials and figuring out what treasures were inside. The first thing that we found was a missionary journal from my grandma's grandfather. He served from 1898-1899. He and his family lived in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. I was able to see a picture of downtown Cardston from 1924 in which the only building with a sign was my great-great grandfather photography studio. After we looked through the missionary journal we talked about my grandma's aunt who compiled a history of my great-great grandfather's life from his journals. Next we turned to my grandma's parents. I learned that her father tried to have a photo studio in Alberta, but it failed. Next he tried labor, working in sugar beet fields. After that he worked as a painter for a while until the business owner moved. With all of these problems making a living, their family moved to Washington, where his brother lived. I had always wondered why they left Canada. Next, we looked through some of the other documents and found a compilation of patriarchal Blessings arranged by my great grandmother. She collected all of the blessings for her children, parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, and turned it into a patriarchal blessing family history. I quickly scanned them all, since these were the only copies that we possessed. There were 25 blessings altogether. Lastly we went through the four-volume history that my great-grandmother wrote about herself and her family. We talked about how she studied and became a nurse and worked at the municipal hospital in Cardston. And how she dated her future husband for four years while he built them a house. Also during that time she paid for her brothers to go on missions. I was also able to see many pictures from their early married life and pictures of my grandma when she was young. Last of all I saw my grandmas and grandpas high school graduation photos. I have already learned so much, and I have not even read the documents yet. My grandma left the box to me to see what I can do with it.
