Ernest James Huff

Grandpa Huff (Hen) was his nick name. He let me drive the team of horses when I was really little, about 6-7 years old in front the Shepherd Egg Farm in Lake Shore. They were big draft horses, a bay and a red roan. Grandpa Hen owned about 40 Acres in that area and was a Full Time farmer to provide for his family. He had about 5-6 milk cows, milk them by hand and take the milk and run through a cream separator to separate milk from cream. They fed the milk to the calves or pigs and saved the cream to sell to the creamery on Saturdays to make cheese. This gave Farmers some income each week to buy needed groceries. Hen also had a coop full of chickens for eggs. They cleaned the eggs and sold them on the same day as the cream. In this Era, most of the Farmers followed this tradition of Chickens and Milk Cows for cash income until other crops such as Sugar Beets, Grain and Hay. Later when Del Monte came to the area the Farmers raised Pea's, Beets, Sweat Corn and Lima Beans and sold to them.
