Description

Samuel & his 1st wife Emma Bridge.

Emma's brother died in the 1859 wreck of the "Royal Charter" near Angelsea, Britain, in which 450 people lost their lives. Her future husband Samuel Edward Gapper was one of the relatively few rescued from that disaster. They married in England and she returned to NZ with him. The couple were childless - not to be confused with his 2nd wife, Emma Gyllencreutz (1867-1949), whom he married in 1891 and made him a father for the first time at age 61. She is buried in Opunake Cemetery
