By Luella Rollins On July 6, 1944, Little Lois and Karen caused very much excitement. We were spending the summer months at Thermo, Utah (a railroad station). Karen and Roena were staying with us, because a new baby had arrived at their home on July 1st, 1944. I left the children, except Lee, at home and told Baker I was going to the Depot and for him to watch the children. While I was there Roena and Phyllis were in the bedroom and wouldn't let Lois and Karen in so they started to look for me. Baker told them I was to the Depot and Lois got the idea I was at the pumphouse. So they started up there walking up the middle of the track. In the meantime I looked out of the depot window and saw them there. I got excited and started after them carrying Lee. They were nearly two blocks away. When I got to our house, I put Lee down at the gate and screamed at the rest of the house. Phyllis got Lee and Baker went with me. We looked West and there was a fast passenger train coming 1/2 mile away. We ran and screamed at the girls but they never got a bit excited and still kept walking on each tie, having a good time. Well, I got so tired and was so excited, Baker beat me to them and I didn't know if he got them off the track as before the train passed. Elaine Heaton, the operator, said she expected us all to get hit. After the train passed there was Baker and the girls, all safe. Thanks to Baker for being a good foot runner. He was barefooted. I cried nearly all the rest of the afternoon and so thankful that our dear little girls were alive.
