Grandpa Carter - the cowboy

Contributor: Fran Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

I remember a time when as a young child I was supposed to hold a black Shetland Pony named Elwood (presumably after grandpa). When the pony realized the person holding him was so small he started to tug and pulled the reins away from me - and then promptly ran down into the alfalfa field below the house in Tabiona. Grandpa already had saddled up his horse Pacer and he quickly grabbed a rope and went after the Shetland pony. If the pony were to eat too much alfalfa it would bloat and die, so he quickly roped the horse and drug it up out of the field. I shall always remember how powerful and capable my grandfather Elwood Berlin Carter looked as he mounted his large horse and took off after the pony. This and many other pleasant memories during summers at the ranch in Tabiona always left the impression on me of my grandfather as a cowboy. Daniel E. Williams
