WILLIAM HALLIWILL

William and Elizabeth (Cox) Halliwill, natives of Pennsylvania and pioneers of Summit Co., locating in Franklin Township in the spring of 1814. They were the first settlers in that township (then Stark County). Christopher Johnson, whom the county atlas claims as the first settler, came the day after the Halliwill family. They resided there until 1833, when they removed to Richfield Township (then Medina County), locating in the southern part of the township, where son Joseph now (1881) resides. They continued residents of the township until their deaths. He died July 25,1855, and his wife Nov. 18, 1876.

Mr. Halliwill was a prominent and respected citizen, and occupied various offices of trust. He was elected one of the first Justices of the Peace while a resident of Franklin Township, which office he filled honorably for several years. There are ten children now living, as follows: John living in Fostoria; David a resident of Bucyrus, Ohio; Thomas in Medina Co.; Levi living in Michigan; Andrew R. a resident of Henry Co., Iowa; Joseph the subject of the sketch; Absalom O. residing in Michigan; Jane Woodruff in Fulton Co.; Priscilla Bunker in Henry Co., Ill., and Kesiah living in Medina Co. Joseph was born in Franklin Township in 1825, and since the removal of his parents to Richfield, has been a resident of that township and of the old homestead, following in the profession of his father, in which he has been deservedly successful. He has 200 acres of improved land, and, for the past twenty-five years, has made quite a specialty of sheep. [History of Summit County: Richfield Township, p1001]. Note: Richfield Township, formerly in Medina County, Ohio was incorporated into Summit County in 1840.

RESEARCH NOTE:

Although numerous family researchers claim that William, was the son of George Halliwill and (his first wife) Nancy Ann PERCY, the LDS International Genealogical Index for North America lists the following: "Nancy Ann Percy married James Halliwell; had one child, William b. 8 Aug 1778, d. 25 Jul 1855." No sources listed, but generally submitted by works of individuals. For simplicity sake, William has been grouped with George and his (only proven) wife Nancy Ann KIRBY. Otto Moore stated that William, his wife, and their family moved from Kentucky to the George Halliwill Stark County, Ohio homestead (1814). Carl Brahmstead claimed that a Native American is said to have severed one of William's hands.

David married, 12 Feb 1829 in Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio, Mary Ealdon Eakin, a daughter of James Eakin and Hannah Davis. The couple's marriage was recorded as: Halliwell, David 24 to Mary Eakin 19, by JP John Franks, return filed 2-18-1829 [Wayne Co., Ohio Marriages Vol. 3 p94]. Mary was born on 6 Jan 1810 in Center Co., PA, and died 11 Jun 1876. Her last known residence was Crawford Co., Ohio. David and Mary's family bible records reflect her middle initial as possibly a "D" with her last name spelled EAKIN-HALLIWILL. She lived: 66y 5m 5d.

In 1978, David's 1849 Family Bible was in the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Zimmerman of Nevada, Wyandot Co., Ohio. Birth information was extracted from the said by Halliwell on 15 Nov 2001. The couple removed from Wayne Co. to Medina county soon after they married. Between 1836-46 they removed to Crawford Co., where they first constructed a log house on fertile farmland about four miles west, slightly south of Bucyrus. Their daughter Catherine was born there in 1846. David then built a frame house on the property during the Civil War (1861-65) and lived there until his death in 1887 at 82y 8m 1d. The biographical sketch of her son, Nathan [The History of Summit Co., p1011] states that his mother died at the of 63. Although many fellow researchers list her death date as 18 Nov 1876 Lybolt's "Hallowell-Halliwill Familiy's" depicts her date of birth as 19 Sep 1809, and her death as 23 Mar 1872.

Elizabeth married (1) 13 Nov 1828 in Franklin Twp., Stark Co., Ohio, John Peiffer Swigart of Lawrence Twp., Stark Co., Ohio. He was born c1800, and died c1836 in Franklin Twp., Summit Co., Ohio. Elizabeth and John Swigart were united in marriage by Rev. John W. Hamm. The couple made their home in Manchester (now Nimisilla), Stark (now Summit) Co., Ohio on a farm which was located off Manchester Road (SR 93) on Swigart Road. After John's death, Elizabeth sold the said farm and moved to Richfield Twp., Medina (now Summit) Co., Ohio. There she took up 109 acres of wildland (purchased 1832 by John), where she constructed a log house.

Elizabeth married (2) Oliver Taylor on 4 Apr 1837 in Medina Co., Ohio. The couples marriage notice appeared in the Ohio Repository newspaper [21 Nov 1828, p3, col. 1]. Oliver was born about 1805 in Massachusetts. The couple had four additional children. Elizabeths' sister, Jane (Halliwill) Fauble, resided within minutes of the family in 1850. Elizabeth, a daughter of Joseph George and Catherine "Elizabeth" Peiffer, was born 1773 and died 2 Oct 1856. oseph George and Elizabeth (Peiffer) Swigart removed from Lancaster Co., PA in a Prairie Schooner in 1806 and settled in the wilderness of Plain Twp., Stark Co., Ohio.

John Peiffer Swigart died c1836, before removing to his newly purchased tract in Richfield Twp., Medina (Summit) Co. His death occurred in Franklin Twp., formerly Stark Co., which in 1840 became a portion of the newly created Co. of Summit. There is a very strong possibility that many of the Swigart family members were buried at Kyser Cemetery, once known as Swigart Cemetery. Inscriptions are included in Summit Co. Chapter, Ohio Genealogy Society's "Summit Co. Cemetery Inscriptions" [Vol. 2, pp. 39-41]. The cemetery (est. before 1848) is located on Swigart Road, about one half mile south of SR 619. In 1861, John and Rebecca Kyser and Henry and Sabina Daily deeded the land to the "Trustees of Kyser Burying Ground" for a public burring ground. Although the cemetery was heavily vandalized several years ago, it has been restored and is now (in 2002) maintained by the Twp.

Excerpts from "The History of Medina Co." include -- Southwest section of Sharon Center: " George Chandler owned lot 45, sold it to Henry Hazen, then to John Swigart, and the present (1948) owner is William Copley" (p309). Sharon Center: "South from the square on Rt. 94 is the Kaufman Appliance Room which deals in electric appliances. This sales room is located on the former John Swigart farm." Samuel Fauble was reared a farmer in Wayne Co., Ohio and there married Jane Halliwill, a daughter of Stark Co., Pioneer. To this union were born Josiah, Cyrus, Samuel, all of which are veterans of the Civil war, Caroline, Martha, Emiline, Elizabeth and Leisa. Fauble Family History.

Michael Fauble was the second son of Johann Jacob and Juliana (Schultz) Faubel, and was born 10 February 1772 in Heidleberg Twp., York Co., PA and died 25 April 1863 in Hinckley Twp., Medina Co., Ohio. Johann Jacob, served in the Continential Army, although, his brothers and father did not support the Revolution in Maryland. Michael married Agnes "Nancy" McMahon in 1795, Somerset, PA. She was the second daughter of Morris and Agnes (Perkinson) McMahon and was born 17 Aug 1775 in PA and died 26 Dec 1846 in Chippewa Twp., Wayne Co., Ohio.

Michael and Agnes Fauble had the following children:

1. Katherine 10 Sep 1797 in Frederick Co., Maryland.

2. Mary 3 Jan 1799 in Frederick Co., Maryland.

3. Jacob 1 Apr 1800 in Frederick Co., Maryland

4. John 1 Dec 1801 in Frederick Co., Maryland, d. 23 Oct 1894 in Onekama Twp., Manistee Co., Michigan.

5. Margaret 25 Dec 1803 in Frederick Co., Maryland. d. 14 Jan 1899 in Wayne Co., Ohio.

6. Samuel 14 May 1806 in Westmoreland Co., PA. He died 2 Dec 1850 in Illinois (see said biography).

7. Elizabeth 9 Jun 1807 in Westmoreland Co., PA. She married Lanson Underwood, a son of Isaac and Zilpha (Castle) Underwood.

8. Michael 10 Feb 1810 in Westmoreland Co., PA.

9. Agnes Nancy 15 Aug 1812 in Stark Co., Ohio. She married Ahira Underwood, a son of Isaac and Zilpha (Castle) Underwood.

10. Issac 25 Feb 1815 in Stark Co., Ohio. d. 13 Sep 1872 in Fulton Co., Ohio

11. Mattie Martha 2 Aug 1817 in Stark Co., Ohio.

Michael Fauble was born in PA [Wayne Co. Ohio History]. Johann Jacob Fauble owned property in Manheim and Heidleberg Twps. in York Co., PA. He and his wife Juliana Schultz, daughter of Hans Martin and Anna Catherina (Krahmer) Schultheiss had six children: Peter 1771; Michael 10 Feb 1772; Anna Catherine 29 Jan 1773 in Manchester, Maryland, d. 28 Nov 1845 in Roane Co., Tennessee; Jacob 1775; Mary 1777 and John 1779.

"The History of Portage and Summit Co., Ohio" and the "Pioneers of Medina Co." each provide a short biography of Michael Fauble 1772-1863: Michael Fauble was born in the Keystone state (PA), a son of a Revolutionary soldier who had come from Germany and had settled in PA prior to the Declaration of Independence. Michael was married in his native state and later became a pioneer of Chippewa Twp., Wayne Co., Ohio. Michael had 160 aces of wild land which he cleared up from the forest and converted into a fine farm on which he lived the remainder of his life. Michael died at the patriarchal of ninety-nine years, a consistent member of the Methodist church and a greatly respected citizen.

The German born Johann Jacob Fauble died in December 1781 in Hanover, York Co., PA. Brother Frederick Fauble married Margaret's younger sister Catherine. His brother Melchior died 8 Jan 1817 in Baltimore, Maryland. He married Maria Sabina Uhler, who was the second daughter of Dietrich and Margaret (Kaltreider) Uhler, and she was born 21 Jan.

Melchoir and Maria had the following children:

1. Anna Maria, christened 17 Nov 1784 in Manchester, Maryland. She married Jacob Foute 20 Jun 1795 in Baltimore Co., Maryland.

2. Caroline married George Jacob Houx 23 Feb 1808 in Frederick, Maryland. They had six children: Peter married Elisabeth Painter 13 Oct 1792 in Baltimore; Elizabeth; George F.; Frederick; Mary; and John who married a Anna Margaret and lived in Frederick, Maryland. Five "Fauble" families are listed in the 1790 census. In Fredrerick Co.: John Fauble and Jacob Forble. Baltimore Co.: Fredarick, Michael, and Peter Foubel. In the book "New World Immigrants" (p46), Anna Elisabetha (Bald) Faubell is said to be the wife of Johannes Faubell and went with him to the New World from Kandel, Kreis Germersheim before 17 May 1756. This Johannes is Peter Fauble's brother Johannes Vauble, who arrived on the "Peggy" on 16 Oct 1754. The mother of Peter Fauble's children, Johann Jacob, Frederick, Melchoir, and Catarina, would be then Maria Catarina Fauble.

John Fauble 1801-1894 told a Manistee Times-Sentinel, 13 Dec 1889, reporter that he was born in Maryland and moved to PA when he was two (1804). This makes Michael and Nancy's first five, Katherine, Mary, Jacob, John and Margaret to be born in Maryland, perhaps Frederick Co. The next three, Samuel, Elizabeth, and Michael would have been born in Westmoreland Co., PA. The last three, Agnes, Issac, and Mattie, would have been born in Stark Co., Ohio before they moved to Wayne Co. in 1818. Johann Jacob Faubel, 1745-1781, was the oldest son of Johannes Peter, 1720-1799, and Anna Elisabetha (Bald) Faubell, who immigrated to the PA colony from Kandel, Pfalz (Palatine) about 1752. The Faubles of Manistee Co., Michigan have long believed that their roots are trace by alternating Johns and Michaels back to the immigrant. In this case, the line of descent would be: John Morrison Fauble (1870-1940), Michael John Fauble (1840-1920), John Fauble (1801-1894), Michael Fauble (1772-1863), Johann Jacob Fauble (1745-1781), the immigrant.

7. William Halliwill was born on 9 Jul 1813 in Steubenville, Jefferson Co., Ohio. He never married, and died on 21 Jan 1852. He was interred with his parents, and his brother in Osborn Cemetery in Richfield Twp., Summit Co., Ohio. Inscriptions, Row Three -- William 21 Jan 1852, 33y 6m 12d (s/o W. & E.); Note: 1996's work had year as 1862.

8. George Halliwill was born on 24 Feb 1815 in Stark Co., Ohio, and died on 21 Nov 1816 in Stark Co., Ohio.

9. Priscilla R. Halliwill was born on 7 Nov 1816 in Stark Co., Ohio. She died on 18 Aug 1896 in Warren Co., Illinois, and was buried in Hope Cemetery, Kelly Twp., Warren Co., Illinois. Priscilla was blind. She married Nathanial "Nathan" Bunker on 23 May 1837 in Richfield Twp., Medina Co., Ohio. Nathanial was born on 11 May 1812 in Armstrong Co., PA. He died on 27 Mar 1885 in Warren Co., Illinois, and was buried in Hope Cemetery.

10. Thomas Cox Halliwill was born on 26 Feb 1818 in Stark Co., Ohio. He died on 1 Mar 1899 in Chatham, Medina Co., Ohio, and was buried on 3 Mar 1899 in Waltz Cemetery, Lafayette, Medina Co., Ohio.

Thomas, a farmer, appears on the 1874 Medina Co. Atlas Map: Litchfield Twp. with a home situated on 92 acres, located in NW Section 49, T 3-N, R 16-W. He purchased the HALLIWILL family cemetery plot, which consisted of four lots in row 9 plot 6 (platted from the church to the road, recorded left to right). The family plot is shared by Thomas, his second wife Nancy Ella (Harper), and their daughter Emma (Halliwill) Cover. His death was recorded as Thom Halliwill, born in Stark Co., Ohio, died 1 March 1899, 81, male of Apoplexy [Chatham, Medina Co., Ohio Deaths].

Thomas, a carpenter by trade, was twice married, (1) 26 Jul 1849 to Miss Sarah Battles (1831-1836), a native of New York state. She was born in 1831 in New York. She died in 1856. The couple were enumerated as Hallowell on the 1850 census in Litchfield Twp. He being 28 years of, she but 19. They were blessed by the birth of two children--Phebe and Alvah, the later born 23 Nov 1855. Sarah departed this life in 1856.

Thomas married (2) 26 Feb 1857 in Spencer, Nancy Ella Harper, a daughter of Henry Harper and Elizabeth Ames Risner. Nancy and Thomas' marriage notice appeared in the Medina Co. Gazette on March 4, 1857. Nancy was born on 30 Dec 1825 in Ohio. She died on 8 Apr 1913 in Elyria, Lorain Co., Ohio. She was buried on 10 Apr 1913 in Waltz Cemetery. Keziah Belle organized the first Family Reunion which, was held on 22 Sep 1900 at her farm in Risley, Litchfield Twp., Medina Co., Ohio. Following is a transcript of a letter written by a child of Kenneth and Clara Louisa (Halliwill) Snyder. This letter was copied verbatim by Otto A. Moore and is included in his book, The Lance Chronicles. "The Halliwill families of Keziah Belle Halliwill, the widow of George Halliwill would meet with each other at Christmas and exchange gifts as grandma Keziah Belle Halliwill got older, it was hard for her to go out and ride. maybe in a spring wagon. She ask us to her house, all for dinner and plan to have a yearly reunion. We meet at her house in Wisley, Medina Co., Ohio on 22 Sept 1900. She also asked us to learn the history of the Halliwill's. Grandfather George Halliwill had died before (17 Feb 1890). At this gathering all of her family came and about fifty other relatives came for a picnic dinner served on tables spread by the old evergreen trees. Grandma asked us to chose officers and a place and time for our next meeting. We choose for president John Tooth of Litchfield Ohio. For secretary Ina Dennison of Litchfield and for Treasure John Halliwill of Wisley Ohio. The place of the next meeting the Medina fair grounds in 1901 and continue year to year. But grandma Keziah was not to be with us. She was looking for two brothers and nieces and nephews from Michigan, Illinois, and Bucyrus Ohio also others. Grandma had a very sick spell and was called away about one week before the reunion. Many friends came from Iowa. Nieces and nephews came from Illinois and some from Michigan. We had to go with the reunion so short time even hard for all of us but grandma joined the reunion and those of us that are left to live to more mature years. The history

is a memory of us all it is nice to see the dear old faces. As the older generations leave us the history of the ways and customs of our ancestors become to be more interest to us. It all show we all as one family should at all times be most loyal to each other as we each one of us some day must leave a life history. I forgot to mention brother Dave Halliwill family of Bucyrus, Lima and Lafayet Hardin Co., Ohio had the reunion one year it was back here in Medina Co. and many of the older ones gone as we get older it is so nice to remember the ones gone on."

The following note was posted by Susan DeMinico on 26 Feb 2002: After a few months of searching I seem to have found my link into the Johann Jurgh Kast line from Herkimer. Peter (b. 7 Feb 1770) was my 5th gr grandfather. I have seen a lot of information through Peter's son James Hale, however, my line goes through his younger brother, Sanford F. Kast. Her husband, George Halliwill, represented an old pioneer family of sterling worth who, came here in the days of the Halliwill, Andrew Ross forest primeval when the country was over-run by wild beasts and the council fires of the red men had scarcely died away. They were a sturdy people who delighted to meet and overcome great obstacles, in short, they were true types of empire builders, making it possible for succeeding generations to live in ease and affluence, to ride in modern motor cars over trails which they blazed and over which their ox carts passed. An insight into the characteristics of the subject would indicate that he had inherited some of the worthy traits of his rugged progenitors.

13. Andrew Ross Halliwill was born on 1 Apr 1823 in Stark Co., Ohio. He died on 24 Aug 1913 in Sumner Center, Gratiot Co., Michigan, and was buried in River Lawn Cemetery, Delwin, Denver Twp., Isabella County, Michigan. Andrew married Anna Maria Kirk on 6 Jan 1848 in Warren Co., Illinois. Anna was born on 16 Feb 1828 in New York. She died on 12 Mar 1916 in Trenton, Henry Co., Iowa, and was buried in White Oak Cemetery, Trenton, Henry Co., Iowa. She was the daughter of Lewis Ray Kirk, born c1802, in New York.

The following is a compilation of excerpts from the Hallowell-Halliwill Family's, written by Andrew's great granddaughter, Harriet May Hunt Lybolt, St. Louis, Michigan, 1980. [H. M. H. Lybolt] Page 29: Andrew Ross Hallowell (Halliwill) was born on 1 April 1823 in Stark Co., Ohio. He relocated to Henry Co., Iowa, where each of his children were born.

He and his family moved to Michigan in 1906 and were followed a short time later by my grandparents. With help from Granddad (Alonzo Perin Halliwill), he built a large home, now known as the Alonzo Halliwill homestead on what is currently Warner Road, Sumner Center, Michigan. Grandma (Anna Maria Kirk) died in 1924 and Grandpa lived in the same place until his death in 1934. This homestead was the site of many large family gatherings and reunions, many good memories and some sad ones. Soon after Andrew's death, Anna signed the farm over to granddad (Alonzo Perin Halliwill) and it was homesteaded by William Hallowell (Halliwell). The home has been changed twice since it was sold.

Excerpt from the Preface of said book: Andrew Ross, my great-grandfather homesteaded 40 acres at Sumner Center, Michigan. He and his wife Anna Marie (Kirk) Hallowell lived on the property in a small shack that was built, along with Alonzo Perin (Halliwill) and his family. Alonzo built a large home, 3 stories - 2 stories were finished, but the 3rd never completed. Andrew remained in the small house until he died 24 Aug 1913 and is buried in Denver Twp., Isabelle Co., Michigan. Anna Maria then went back to their home in Trenton, Iowa. After Grandpa died the home was sold and is now owned by Dale Davenport Family and is known as Warner Rd., Sumner Center, Michigan.

NOTE the following corrections to Harriet's research: Andrew Ross's surname was spelled HALLIWILL, as where his descendants. His first two children were born in Warren Co., Illinois and his third in Knox Co., Illinois.

Regimental History. One Hundred and Seventy-seventh Infantry. - Col., Arthur T. Wilcox; Lieut.-Col., William H. Zimmerman; Maj., Ernst J. Kreiger. This regiment was organized at Camp Cleveland from Sept. 23 to Oct. 4, 1864, to serve for one year. Immediately after its organization it proceeded to Nashville, Tenn., via Indianapolis and Louisville. The day after its arrival it was ordered to Tullahoma and constituted a part of the garrison at that place under Gen. Milroy. It remained at Tullahoma until Hood's invasion, when it was ordered to Murfreesboro, where it arrived on Dec. 2. On Dec. 7, Milroy's command, including the regiment, charged the works and drove the Confederates back, capturing 2 pieces of artillery and over 200 prisoners. A few days after this, while on a foraging expedition, the regiment had an engagement with the enemy, in which it lost several wounded. After Hood had been driven from Tennessee the regiment was ordered to Clifton. About the middle of Jan., 1865, it embarked at Clifton, proceeded down the Tennessee and up the Ohio to Cincinnati, where it took the railroad for Washington, D. C. From there it moved to Annapolis, Md., and embarked on a vessel for North Carolina, arriving at Fort Fisher on Feb. 7. It was engaged in two attacks on the enemy's works from the Cape Fear river to the coast, and crossed the river and participated in the flank movement which compelled the Confederates to evacuate Fort Anderson. It next engaged the enemy at Town creek, charging in the rear and capturing the entire command. The next morning it arrived opposite Wilmington, where it remained about a week, then joined Gen. Cox at Kinston and proceeded to Goldsboro, where it joined Sherman's army. After the surrender of Gen. Johnston the regiment was sent to Greensboro, N. C., where it was mustered out on June 24, 1865, in accordance with orders from the war department.
