Edward Joseph Lampman

From a young age Marge and her sister Pearl helped with many of the household chores after school including chopping wood, feeding the chickens and the pigs , preparing meals, washing dishes by the light of an oil lamp and tending the babies (Pratt and Edna) so her mother could milk the cow. When the work of the day was done Marge enjoyed the stories her mother would read to them, stories like "Billy Whiskers" and "Heidi." By the age of 12 Marge had her own team of horses named Dutch and Moose, and she would haul hay and loads of lumber around town. One day while she was pitching hay out of the wagon, she saw a snake next to her and was so frightened that she stuck the pitch fork in her own foot trying to get the snake. She fainted and woke up to her sister Pearl and father pouring cold water on her. One thing that Marge was quite proud of was that she was a fast runner, because of this she would get picked first for the school yard games when she was young. Later when she was 16 and working at "Mary's Cafe" sometimes she wouldn't get off until 2 am, and if she was alone she would run the whole way because there were scary guys that would try to follow her home. And later in life, she chased after a group of older boys who were picking on her nephew Don as he walked home from school. They didn't think that an old lady could possibly catch them so they weren't really running that fast, until they turned around and realized she was right on their heels. She was very protective of any member of her family; she loved and worried about each of them. Eddie grew up in Rochester, New York and when Eddie was 9 years old his mother died, leaving him and 6 other siblings younger than him. They were taken away from his father by the state and were raised in a Catholic orphanage ran by nuns. When Eddie was 17 his father was remarried to a Catholic lady, and was then able to get the children back. But by that time Eddie was ready to leave home and, along with some friends, he started hitch hiking across the country to California looking for work. However he would run out of money in Cedar City, and would never make it to his destination. Marge and Eddie met while she was working at the Goody Garden, and he was working as bell boy at the Hotel El Escalante. They married in 1929 in Parowan, and their marriage would later be solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple Sept 4, 1979. They first lived in a 3rd floor room of the El Escalante Hotel while Eddie was the night clerk, then onto a 3 bedroom apartment when he was manager in the summers. They would later built a home next door to Marge's parents at 94 S. 300 East and had two daughters Patsy and Mary. Marge and Eddie ran the Piute Cafe until Eddie left for military service during World War II, in 1944 . He would serve 20 months with the 185th Infantry Regiment of the US Army in the Philippines and then Korea. When Eddie returned home from war he painted houses for a few years before he found more permanent work at the iron mine for the Utah Construction Company. He would work there for 25 years, keeping the books and handling the payroll. Over the years Eddie accumulated a large collection of industrial sized chains, metal balls, hooks and quartz rocks from the mine that were proudly displayed by the shed in the back yard. This collection would entertain the imaginations of the grandchildren for years. Eddie and Marge were very hard working, honest, good people and they truly enjoyed having family close, especially the grandkids. Marge will forever be remembered by the grandchildren for her candy dish that was always full, the beautiful afghans she would crochet, crying on her back porch while she grated onions for the green sage dressing for Thanksgiving dinner, and the many Christmas Eve parties at her house that always included her delicious sugar cookies and games of finding the pickle ornament on the Christmas tree. Marge and Eddie also loved to garden and had beautiful flowers and roses that boarded their yard. Every Memorial Day they would sell poppies out in front of the grocery store and would go out early to put flags on the veteran’s headstones.
