While building an addition on our home, he gave me the instruction to cut cross-brace supports for our framing. I measured and then cut about 30 or so braces. Unfortunately when I took the first one to him to brace it was about 2 inches short. He looked at me and said, "we needed more firewood, good job." Dad always had a great attitude and sense of humor.

Playing Raquetball

My father loved to play racquetball and he considered himself pretty good at the sport. As we grew up he would take me to play racquetball at BYU. At a younger age I couldn't compete but as I got older I was more competitive. I remember once while I was in high school we went to play. I was significantly more athletic than him but he still won. His accuracy with the ball was amazing and he always had me running around the court while he stood in the middle and hit the ball where he wanted. At the end I was a little frustrated and he reminded me that playing smart is as important as playing hard. It was a good lesson. I don't recall ever beating my dad at racquetball.
