Not the Usual Household Pets

Contributor: RWhisnant Created: 2 years ago Updated: 2 years ago

My grandfather, Deward McMurdie, picked up quite a few out-of-the-ordinary pets throughout his lifetime. His adventurous and humorous personality led him to collect a wide array of "household" pets. He once cought a bob-cat, which he had to get rid of when it continued to eat his family's chickens. After hunting a mother black bear, he saw it's cub at the top of a tree. Climbing up there himself, he brought the bear back home and kept it as long as he could. Once the bear got older, he donated it to a zoo. These stories both come from his youth, but "Bumpa" didn't lose his love for adventure as he got older. As a married man, he obtained (and I do not know how) a baby alligator. Being in a suburb community in Salt Lake City, Utah, he had no better place to keep his alligator... than his own bathtub. As I recall, this alligator's name became "Whopper", since his diet consisted largely of burgers from the nearby Burger King. Having an alligator in the tub frightened his wife on more than one occasion. In any case, the alligator either died (perhaps from malnutrition) or was gotten rid of sometime later.

Bumpa & Wolfie

Some of my fond memories of my Grandpa McMurdie (Bumpa) involved his pet Wolfie, so named being part Timberwolf. Bumpa had a rich history of wild animal pets and Wolfie fit that profile well. He was very aggressive and there were several instances where Wolfie bit people. At some point Wolfie found his new home at the salvage yard and shop in Salt Lake City where my Grandpa worked. I always remember being excited to go to Bumpa's work not only to play around with the salvage cars but to see go and see Wolfie.

Life timeline of Deward Parley McMurdie

1924
Deward Parley McMurdie was born on 18 Sep 1924
Deward Parley McMurdie was 6 years old when Great Depression: In a State of the Union message, U.S. President Herbert Hoover proposes a $150 million (equivalent to $2,197,000,000 in 2017) public works program to help generate jobs and stimulate the economy. The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place mostly during the 1930s, beginning in the United States. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations; in most countries it started in 1929 and lasted until the late-1930s. It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century. In the 21st century, the Great Depression is commonly used as an example of how far the world's economy can decline.
Deward Parley McMurdie was 21 years old when World War II: Combat ends in the Pacific Theater: The Japanese Instrument of Surrender is signed by Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and accepted aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The Pacific War, sometimes called the Asia-Pacific War, was the theater of World War II that was fought in the Pacific and Asia. It was fought over a vast area that included the Pacific Ocean and islands, the South West Pacific, South-East Asia, and in China.
Deward Parley McMurdie was 33 years old when Space Race: Launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. The Space Race refers to the 20th-century competition between two Cold War rivals, the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States (US), for dominance in spaceflight capability. It had its origins in the missile-based nuclear arms race between the two nations that occurred following World War II, aided by captured German missile technology and personnel from the Aggregat program. The technological superiority required for such dominance was seen as necessary for national security, and symbolic of ideological superiority. The Space Race spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, uncrewed space probes of the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and to the Moon.
Deward Parley McMurdie was 45 years old when During the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon. Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the Moon. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours after landing on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21.5 hours on the lunar surface before rejoining Columbia in lunar orbit.
Deward Parley McMurdie was 54 years old when Jim Jones led more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple to mass murder/suicide in Jonestown, Guyana, hours after some of its members assassinated U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan (pictured). James Warren Jones was an American religious cult leader who initiated and was responsible for a mass suicide and mass murder in Jonestown, Guyana. He considered Jesus Christ as being in compliance with an overarching belief in socialism as the correct social order. Jones was ordained as a Disciples of Christ pastor, and he achieved notoriety as the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple cult.
Deward Parley McMurdie was 57 years old when The first launch of a Space Shuttle (Columbia) takes place: The STS-1 mission. The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as part of the Space Shuttle program. Its official program name was Space Transportation System (STS), taken from a 1969 plan for a system of reusable spacecraft of which it was the only item funded for development. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981, leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. In addition to the prototype whose completion was cancelled, five complete Shuttle systems were built and used on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Operational missions launched numerous satellites, interplanetary probes, and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST); conducted science experiments in orbit; and participated in construction and servicing of the International Space Station. The Shuttle fleet's total mission time was 1322 days, 19 hours, 21 minutes and 23 seconds.
