How to Get a Free Milkshake

Contributor: BarbaraLeishman Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

I got to know my uncle, Delwyn Hansen very well. I lived in Dayton, Idaho with my grandparents, Ann and Joe Hansen from 1957 to 1959. Delwyn was still home going to West Side High. I got my drivers license when I was 14 years old and Delwyn would let me borrow his car (sometimes). I really appreciated that. It was also his idea for Arvin and me to spend the summer painting the farm buildings a bright red. That included a darn big barn. It took us all summer to complete the job. It certainly kept us busy, and covered with red paint all summer. At this time our church Sacrament meeting was held Sunday night at 7:30. It was not uncommon for older youth in the church to take a date to Sacrament meeting. One summer Sunday evening Delwyn took a date to the Dayton Ward meeting and then gave a ride home to Arvin, JoAnn and me. After dropping us off at the house he and his date headed to Preston. They only thought they had dropped us all off. While Arvin and JoAnn exited the car, I secreted myself behind the back seat , and crouched down quiet as a mouse. They had no idea I was there, and I had no idea what I was thinking. I never said a word, but I was starting to wonder how I was going to handle the situation, and how much trouble I was already in. After about fifteen minutes we ended up at the Polar Bear in Preston, Idaho. Del parked and asked his date, "What would like?" I decided I better fess up so I replied from the back seat, "I would like a milkshake." They both jumped like a ghost was present, but regained their composure when they saw it was me. Del said, "What the _____ are you doing back there?" Thinking quickly I said, "Would chocolate be ok?" By this time they had gotten over their shock at their uninvited guest, and began to laugh. Del bought me the chocolate shake, then took me back to Dayton. This time they both watched very closely to be sure I exited and actually went into the house. One of JoAnn's (a sister of Delwyn) friends later wrote up the story, sent it to the Desert News where they published it under a humor column. I always liked Delwyn a lot. I felt very bad when he contracted rheumatoid arthritis at an early age. He planted and operated a Christmas Tree farm in Dayton, and I remember going up there with my family to get our Christmas tree. Thanks for the milkshake Del!

Life timeline of Delwyn G. Hansen

1939
Delwyn G. Hansen was born on 21 May 1939
Delwyn G. Hansen was 3 years old when World War II: The Imperial Japanese Navy made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, intending to neutralize the United States Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
Delwyn G. Hansen was 16 years old when Disneyland Hotel opens to the public in Anaheim, California. The Disneyland Hotel is a resort hotel located at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, owned by the Walt Disney Company and operated through its Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products division. Opened on October 5, 1955, as a motor inn owned and operated by Jack Wrather under an agreement with Walt Disney, the hotel was the first to officially bear the Disney name. Under Wrather's ownership, the hotel underwent several expansions and renovations over the years before being acquired by Disney in 1988. The hotel was downsized to its present capacity in 1999 as part of the Disneyland Resort expansion.
Delwyn G. Hansen was 25 years old when John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas; hours later, Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in aboard Air Force One as the 36th President of the United States. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, commonly referred to by his initials JFK, was an American politician who served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. He served at the height of the Cold War, and the majority of his presidency dealt with managing relations with the Soviet Union. As a member of the Democratic Party, Kennedy represented the state of Massachusetts in the United States House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate prior to becoming president.
1977
Delwyn G. Hansen was 38 years old when Star Wars is released in theaters. Star Wars is a 1977 American epic space opera film written and directed by George Lucas. It is the first film in the original Star Wars trilogy and the beginning of the Star Wars franchise. Starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, and Peter Mayhew, the film focuses on the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess Leia (Fisher), and its attempt to destroy the Galactic Empire's space station, the Death Star.
Delwyn G. Hansen was 51 years old when Cold War: Fall of the Berlin Wall: East Germany opens checkpoints in the Berlin Wall, allowing its citizens to travel to West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic, starting on 13 August 1961, the Wall cut off West Berlin from virtually all of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and finished in 1992. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc portrayed the Wall as protecting its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany.
