DeLoyal Worthington Bills, age 71, of Provo, Utah died March 14, 2000, at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center of complications from cancer. He was born April 27, 1928, in Delta, Utah, the son of William LeRoy Bills and Phoebe Worthington Bills. He married Gerrie Anderson on August 28, 1952, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his whole life. He served extensively in the Church, serving in a bishopric and high council at BYU, and was a service missionary in the Missionary Training Center at the time of his death. He took great pride in his military service for his country. He served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Boxer shortly after World War II. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1951 and was an avid and sometimes vocal BYU sports fan. He spent his career selling insurance and real estate. He loved barber shop music and participated for many years in the Utah Valley Skyline Chorus, serving a term as its president. His wife and children were the love of his life and in his later years found great pleasure in being a doting grandfather to eleven grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor, was quick to laugh, and loved to hear and tell tall stories. His infectious laugh and crinkled eyes will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife of Provo; one daughter and one son; Lesa and Glenn Gunn of Orem, UT; and Darren and Debra Gentry Bills of Maple Valley, WA; eleven grandchildren, Savanna, Austin, Hudson, Auburn, Cierra and Paige Gunn, and Brian, Nathan, Steven, Tyler and Austin Bills; one older brother and one sister, Keath and Maerene Bills of Lake Elsinore, CA; Leah and Dale Jones of Pocatello, ID. Interment will be at Timpanogos Memorial Gardens, 1000 North 400 East, Orem. Everything’s okay now, Dad. We love you. - See more at: http://www.mylegacymemorial.com/deloyal-worthington-bills-a03-3/#sthash.6QQ7GkfH.dpuf

Deloyal Worthington Bills was 14 years old when World War II: The Imperial Japanese Navy made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, intending to neutralize the United States Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.

Deloyal Worthington Bills was 29 years old when Space Race: Launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. The Space Race refers to the 20th-century competition between two Cold War rivals, the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States (US), for dominance in spaceflight capability. It had its origins in the missile-based nuclear arms race between the two nations that occurred following World War II, aided by captured German missile technology and personnel from the Aggregat program. The technological superiority required for such dominance was seen as necessary for national security, and symbolic of ideological superiority. The Space Race spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, uncrewed space probes of the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and to the Moon.
