Julie remembers family serving in WW II and after

Contributor: Conyngham Created: 11 months ago Updated: 11 months ago

This is from an e-mail from Julie Richmond - June 2012 Dear family and also to all my dear BFFs: Thanks to my sister-in-law, I received this video tonight, one that honors World War II veterans and all veterans. It really brought tears to my eyes to watch it and to remember back during the war when I had two brothers – Dick and Buss – and one brother-in-law, Jayson -- overseas serving our country in the military. Dick and Jayson have since passed away, and so Buss is the only left who I can say “thank-you” to for all you did. For you young boys and men, imagine that Buss went off to war when he was only 17 years old and was on an aircraft carrier right in the middle of things. His carrier actually captured a German submarine not far from Africa and towed the sub all the way back to the east coast of America. Buss was one of the soldiers assigned to go onto the submarine and bring all of the intelligence and other materials onto the carrier. He has a video all about this which is very interesting. My brother Dean served in the Navy after WWII was over. I thought all of you children should know that you have people in your family who have served the country and helped make it possible for us to have the freedom we have. I know all of my family joins me as I applaud you, Buss, as the people in this video did, and thanks you for your bravery and courage. With love, Julie (Grandma BFF)

David Llewellyn Roberts was 43 years old when World War II: The Imperial Japanese Navy made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, intending to neutralize the United States Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although conflicts reflecting the ideological clash between what would become the Allied and Axis blocs began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
