The Things One Quarter (25-cents) Could Buy

04/16/2018
When Grandpa and Grandma Spaulding would come to our home for a visit, Grandpa would come near whichever one of us sisters would be in the room, put his hand in his pocket and pull out a quarter. He would say, "Come here", and would give us a quarter and a little pat on the shoulder. He didn't express much affection, but we knew we were loved because he always came with a quarter and never failed in giving us one when he visited. Grandma did most of the visiting, and Grandpa did most of the nodding and listening. He always entered and exited the same door - never in one door and out the other one. He always wore a long over coat during colder weather and always wore a Fedora hat. He was always very quiet and had a calm manner about him. I was never known to save my quarters for too long at a young age. There were two drug stores and a Ben Franklin store on Main Street in downtown Rigby. We lived just a couple of blocks from Main Street. We just had to walk straight down the side streets and down the alley behind the stores to get to Main Street. There were all kinds of penny candy on the shelves at all three stores, which were really only one or two cents apiece. My favorite thing to buy was a hot fudge or caramel sundae for twenty cents, and for an extra five cents I could have nuts on top. I'm not sure Grandpa intended for me to spend my quarters in this way, but I sure have a 'sweet' memory of Grandpa Spaulding and his pocket change.
