Grandpa Schauerhamer and My Date

Contributor: Kestrala Created: 1 year ago Updated: 1 year ago

Early in 1987, I was living with my Grandpa and Grandma Schauerhamer while I was attending Brigham Young University. This was a very challenging time for my grand parents because my Grandpa (Daniel Reuben Schauerhamer) was suffering from Alzheimer disease and at the same time was blind. He tried his best to do things for himself, but he did require help to do most things during this timeframe. Often when I would talk with Grandpa, he was mostly out of it. He would be able to respond somewhat to questions, but often, he was in his own little world. One day, I had a special date with a girl that I really liked at the time. I don't remember her name any more, but I was bringing her by to meet my grand parents that eventing. While I was getting my grandpa ready for the evening to meet my date, I kept talking to him about this girl and how much I liked her. We actually met in one of my dance classes. He seemed generally interested, but I really did not think he was comprehending that we were going to have a visitor. Then the moment came when I was finalizing getting him dressed. He put on the biggest smile I had seen in the many months working with him. He was so excited to meet my date and to make his best impression. I just remember this and cherish the moment because it was less than 4 months later that he passed away.

His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the executions of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Soviet historians portray Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.
