Memories of Dan- Nina Berry Garnder

Dan and Jenny Welch were asked to teach dance classes to mutual members in the Sarah Branch. Dan lived near Jenny, his niece, in Tunica, MS. Almost 20 miles away. They would practice and Joe, Jenny’s father, drove his school bus each week to bring all the “Mormon Kids” to our weekly meetings. I had been involved in some group dancing, but not individual partner dancing and Dan taught us well. It was a fun learning experience.
One Christmas Dan received a BB Gun he shared with his nephews, Noel, Gerald, and Bobby, As they would shoot he would reach out and catch the BB. He had a miss and the BB lodged in the palm. I think it was never removed.
He asked Betty Frazier for a date and since Shirley, Betty, and I, did so many activities together she said “Yes, if Nina and Shirley can go, Yes.” He took us all to the movies in Crenshaw. He was home from the army he has his own car and we had a lot of fun.
Dan left Mississippi and moved to Utah. After dating Utona he asked me to meet her and give my opinion. I liked her immediately and that seemt to be helpful in his decision to marry for marriage. I always felt her goodness and her love for Dan.
After Dan came home from the Army he’d often say to me “Nina, if we weren’t cousins I’d be at your back door every time you threw out the dishwater.” He would smile cute with that twinkle in his eyes. He was a great cousin and friend to me and I’m grateful he and his family are part of my earthly life.
