Cyrus Fernando

Cyrus Fernando was the first child born to Fernand and Eliza 13 July 1889 in Orderville, Utah. "Cy" was the typical oldest child who takes on heavy family responsibility. During the first few years of her life, Mae thought that Cy was her dad because Fernand was living and working in Boise and only got home a couple of times a year. When they moved from Orderville to Idaho he would ride the pony and help care for his 2 little brothers. He was 5' 10", blond, 175 lbs and was good looking. He and Clarence Clement would go to dances together. He never married. He homesteaded a section of dryfarm land up Wolverine. He ran sheep [200] and raised hay and grain. The summer of 1915 Eliza and the children spent the summer up there with him. He had a two room log cabin to live in. Mae said they killed 23 rattlesnakes in one day up there. Mother remembers that he smoked Bull Durham and she was fascinated as he rolled his own. A few times he gave her a little puff. There were a lot of mushrooms there and they ate them everyway. They also fished and had a lot of trout to eat. One day Mae had a rope around Alice's waist playing horsie. Alice had jumped over a rattlesnake. When Mae saw it she was afraid and pulled Alice backwards over the snake again. Cy had heart trouble for a lot of years. The children remember that the last couple of weeks before he died, his mother held him constantly in a position to reduce his pain. He died 9 Aug 1917 at the young age of 28. They took one of the inside doors off and laid him on it and kept his body cool until burial by keeping wet cloths on him. Cy was loved by all who knew him.
