Springville - Brian Levi Coates, age 24, died on June 15, 2007 in Springville, Utah. Born October 1, 1982 in Springville, Utah to Robert Lynn Coates and Deana Ruth Coates. Brian grew up in Springville, Utah. Brian always enjoyed sports of every kind, especially baseball and football. He graduated from Springville High School in 2001. He worked in home construction as a carpenter. Brian was a hard worker and will be remembered for his handsome looks, and his love of the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, he loved to spend time snowboarding with his family. Brian was a good listener and always willing to help those in need. He had a special talent for loving and relating to people of all ages. His favorite thing to do was spend time with family and friends. Survived by his parents: Lynn and Deana Coates; Brothers; Dusty Robert and Jeffrey Clark; Sister; Heather Lynn (Ryan) Ursulich; Grandparents: William and Wanda Coates, Filer Idaho; Ruth Clark Burr, Hemet, California; Niece, Andie Ursulich; And many loving Aunts, Uncles and extended family members. Memorial service will be held Monday, June 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Hobble Creek 7th Ward Chapel, 1965 East Canyon Road, Springville, Utah. Friends may call 1 hour prior at the Church. Funeral Directors Wheeler Mortuary. Published in the Daily Herald on 6/22/2007

Brian Levi Coates was 12 years old when The Rwandan genocide begins when the aircraft carrying Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana and Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira is shot down. The Rwandan genocide, also known as the genocide against the Tutsi, was a genocidal mass slaughter of Tutsi in Rwanda by members of the Hutu majority government. An estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 Rwandans were killed during the 100-day period from 7 April to mid-July 1994, constituting as many as 70% of the Tutsi population. Additionally, 30% of the Pygmy Batwa were killed. The genocide and widespread slaughter of Rwandans ended when the Tutsi-backed and heavily armed Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) led by Paul Kagame took control of the country. An estimated 2,000,000 Rwandans, mostly Hutus, were displaced and became refugees.
