Contributor: JoEllen60 Created: 2 years ago Updated: 2 years ago

Archie Hyrum Sawyer 1908 ~ 2003 Archie Hyrum Sawyer, 95, died of natural causes on November 26, 2003 at the Orchard Park Care Center in Orem, Utah, where he had resided for the past year. Archie was born in Malta, Idaho on April 7, 1908, the third of seven children, to David Enoch and Margarete Gehring Sawyer. His early youth was on the family ranch up to the 8th grade. It took him three years to finish the fifth grade as his education was interrupted to help with the crops. He met Vida Evelyn Peterson in Salt Lake City during the depression, and they were married on Christmas Eve 1931. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to California where he worked in his father's car painting business. He later became a neon glass blower, working for his brother David who owned Marveon Sign Co. in Rock Springs, Wyoming. When David moved the business to Ogden, Utah, Archie started Sawyer Sign Co. in Rock Springs and ran the business for nearly 40 years until he retired and moved to Orem in 1975. He was an avid fisherman and hunter during his many years in Wyoming and raised his children with fishing rods instead of rattles. He made one nostalgic trip to fish his favorite creek in Wyoming, but jumping rock-to-rock fell and broke his ribs and bruised his bottom. Archie was a High Priest in the LDS Church and served as a bishop's counselor and on the High Council until being made Bishop of the Rock Springs Second Ward. He was a master electrician and did all of the wiring for the newly-constructed Stake Center while serving as bishop. Archie is survived by his wife of 72 years, his son Dr. Melvin (Sylvia) Sawyer of Orem, his daughter-in-law Jeanne O' Mara of Springfield, Virginia, and his sister Wanda Pelczar of Chula Vista, California. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Carol and her husband Don Jelovchan, his son Major General David A. Sawyer, and his remaining brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Cascade Chapel at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem. Friends may call Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the mortuary and also Monday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Ogden City Cemetery.
