We moved to Mammoth when I was one, from Fountain Green. It was in the mining town that I attended school. At the age of twelve, I walked around to the Iron Blossom and worked at a boarding house for four dollars a week. It was four o'clock in the morning, winter and summer that I went there to help cook, wash dishes then scrub wide board floors on my hands and knees finishing just in time to serve hot drinks and cake as the tired and hungry miners came from work. There was a young mother with four children who had a young baby and I went to help her take care of them all, even bathed the baby as a mother was not allowed to get up until the eleventh day. It was while here I had an unusual experience. It was a bitter cold morning as I trudged to work my feet became numb, as I entered her home I realized my feet were frozen. It was with pain much difficulty that I performed my duties four hours I trudged through, then my aunt Sarah came finding me in tears asked what was wrong. She immediately had me remove my shoes. My toes were all split open so she packed them in snow and took me home in a wagon. I felt terrible leaving that young mother there with all of her responsibilities. When I was 17 years old I was married and had one daughter before I was 18. We moved to Eureka Utah for several years. Later we moved to Salt Lake City in the same house that Brigham Young lived in at one time. From there I went to Butte Montana and cooked for the railroad gang on the Union Pacific Railroad. After working in several hotels, real hard work, and keeping house for many families I came back to Utah in 1929. My sister Alice Schwab needed me at that time when Donna Rae was born, she was always very dear to me. Practically every home in Dividend I helped in some way while my sister lived there. While there I married again. My husband only lived for two years, then I moved to Payson. It was at the good old dances at the Schuler Dance Hall where the Legion Hall is now that I met Fred Graves. We were married in Nephi by William L. Hoyt on the 23rd of December in 1939. We have had many enjoyable times together while in the Fourth Ward. I worked in the Relief Society block teaching, helped on serving committees, also enjoyed helping with their bazaars. Through the Senior Aaronic classes and friends we desired to go to the temple, so on the 14th of November 1959, we left for the beautiful Manti Temple along with my sister Alice, Henry, James D. Garner and his wife. It was a thrilling day and a pleasant one. We are now putting our house in order and studying Genealogy work and preparing to help others to see the blessings that are ours through study and work.
