Headstone Description

In the spring of 1847, Robert T. Thomas was with the first company of faithful followers who set out from Winter Quarters, under Brigham Young, on the long journey west. He arrived in the valley on July 22, 1847, and helped establish the Utah settlement. Robert T. Thomas was in the company of 33 men sent by Brigham Young in March 1849 to settle Ft. Field near Utah Lake. Mary Ann Turner taught school in the old fort in Utah County. Mary Ann and Robert were married in the old fort on April 18, 1850. They changed the barren desert into a rich and fruitful country and endured many hardships by their determination and faith in the Lord. (Monument Dedicated by Loving Descendants - 1999)

Ann Catherine Thomas (Ericksen) was 6 years old when Samuel Morse receives the patent for the telegraph. Samuel Finley Breese Morse was an American painter and inventor. After having established his reputation as a portrait painter, in his middle age Morse contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs. He was a co-developer of the Morse code and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy.
Ann Catherine Thomas (Ericksen) was 25 years old when Petroleum is discovered in Titusville, Pennsylvania leading to the world's first commercially successful oil well. Petroleum is a naturally occurring, yellow-to-black liquid found in geological formations beneath the Earth's surface. It is commonly refined into various types of fuels. Components of petroleum are separated using a technique called fractional distillation, i.e. separation of a liquid mixture into fractions differing in boiling point by means of distillation, typically using a fractionating column.
