Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster Sept 2, 1861, mustered into service at Harrisburg as a Pvt with CO B, 45th PA Infantry, & discharged by surgeon's certificate March 31, 1862. He also enlisted in Lancaster Oct 5, 1864, mustered into service there Oct 6 as a Pvt with CO C, 199th PA Infantry. On June 29, 1865, he transferred to CO B, 188th PA Infantry, to complete his term of service, honorably discharged Oct 11, 1865
