Listening to the Spirit

Contributor: finnsh Created: 2 years ago Updated: 2 years ago

This is a story about listening to the Spirit that was told to me by my grandmother, Virginia Hunter Harbaugh. Virginia was a teenager when one Sunday she was ill, so she stayed home from church. She was working over the stove when she fainted. She fell onto the hot stove and burned her forearms very badly. She needed help and her best option was to send her little brother, Arty, down to the church to get their parents. It was a potentially dangerous trip for Arty because he was only about 4 or 5 years old and he had to cross a busy street to get to the church building. But bravely, Arty started the journey to get help. In the meantime, Virginia's mother, Alvera Thomas Hunter, was sitting in church, and suddenly felt the impression to go home. She obeyed the impression and left the meeting. As she walked out of the building, she saw little Arty across the busy street about to cross it. She was able to get to him before he crossed the street, and she was able to get home to help Virginia. I've always been impressed by this story because Alvera listened to the Spirit even though it may have been easy to discount her feelings, and talk herself out of the prompting. She could've thought that it wasn't right to leave church or could've felt embarrassed to walk out of a meeting. Think of what could've happened if she hadn't listened to that prompting! Also, this story helps me know that Heavenly Father is mindful of us individually and will send help to those who need it. I am grateful for Alvera's example of following the Spirit.

His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. Soviet historians portray Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.
