LOVINIA--Lovinia Nicholson Sylvester Lyon Berry, transcript of her letter to her daughter-in-law, Sarah Violate Blackburn Berry

04/18/2018
The following is a transcript of a significant and priceless pioneer letter for our family. It was written during the Great Depression by Joy's great grandmother, Lovinia Nicholson Sylvester Berry, when she was seventy-nine years old. She wrote it to her daughter-in-law, Sarah Violate Blackburn Berry, who was Joy's maternal grandmother. Lovinia was the third and youngest plural wife of William Shanks Berry who was her senior by sixteen years. Her husband was tragically killed on his mission in Tennessee in 1884 leaving his families behind. Lovinia was widowed for seventy-one years and passed away when she was almost 101 years old. Before she passed away, Lovinia held either Donald or Brett Blackburn, great-great grandsons, when only seven to eight months old. When visiting Joy at her home in Cedar City, Lovinia, although shaky, was excited to be allowed to hold the baby. Joy recalled her saying, "Joy, you are the only one who will let me hold their baby." Lovinia was also fascinated that modern baby food came from a jar from the store. Grandma Joy's mother, Ora, is mentioned in the letter along with Ora's younger brother, Orson. The "Ethel" mentioned in the letter is probably Lovinia's contemporary relative, not the later step-mother of Joy. Source: Notes from two conversations with Joy, June 24, 1998. and October 2014.) (Note: I lightly edited spelling, grammar, and punctuation for easier reading. I also added a question mark after names that are difficult to decipher in the letter.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. George, Utah, March 19, 1933 Dear Violate & Orson, I guess you will think me a long time answering your letters. It is not because I do not think of you for I often wonder how you are getting along. Ora wrote that you were thinking of having Orson's leg amputated. I sure hope and pray that he gets along all right. Be sure and let me know as I feel very anxious about him. Wish I could send you some money but am down and out like the rest, but hope something will turn before long. My dear sister, Altheria, past away on her birthday the tenth of March. I sure feel very lonely without her. She has been very sick all winter. I have been with her a great deal. She suffered a great deal towards the last but passed away peacefully. Also, there have been three deaths in Kanarra--Uncle Wrile Rease [?], Wilames [?] and Will Roundy. I did not go up as the weather was so cold and I have to be careful. You know I am getting old. I am still working in the temple but this may be my last year. I had a letter from Jim. He said they were pulling along the best they can hoping for better times. Emma and family are well but having a hard time [getting] along as Eph cannot get any work. And so it goes with us all. Ethel is staying with her mother in Kanarra this winter as Sister Williams [?] is sick. She has Hazel with her. But Virginia [?] and Doyle [are] in Delta with Myal [?]. I would surely like to see you all. How are the girls and their babies? I would love to come and see the little pets. It is lovely for you to have them all around you. Where is Jesse? Is he still at Torry? Well, Orson, it will be much better for you if you can get a better leg, if it is an artificial one, and I hope the way will open so Grandma can help to get it. You must have good courage and ask the Lord to bless you. And we will all have faith and I think you will come through it all okay. This letter will have to be to [you] all as I am a very poor correspondent. With much love to all of you. I remain your dear grandmother, Lovinia S. Berry

Altheria came from parents who came across the plains as pioneers from England. She had a beautiful childhood; music filled her home life there in Springville. Andres had been partly raised by her father who took him under his wing. When Andrew came back to see the family at age 30, he fell in love with Althea, who had always loved him. They had ten children in 24 years. Althea saw all her children grow up and be married. Eliza, my grandma, always had a deep love and respect for her mother. Love of reading and education were important for her and her children -- many who graduated with college degrees.

LESTER PAUL BLACKBURN, "I HAD A HEART ATTACK," Entries from his 1990 Journal.

LESTER PAUL BLACKBURN, "I HAD A HEART ATTACK," Entries from his 1990 Journal. Note: I lightly edited Dad's journal entries below to make reading easier. In 1990, Dad was retired and lived with Mom (Joy) in Toquerville, Utah. Dad carefully logged each day's activities and happenings and often wrote his feelings. For example, when he was recovering in the Provo hospital from a heart attack and prostate surgery, his Mom, Dola, was also in the same hospital from a stroke. In a humorous Feb. 16 entry, Paul tells that his catheter and his mother's catheter got tangled up together. During the same month, Luke's appendix burst--Luke is a grandson--and Tavish, a great grandson, was born. Not long afterward, on April 3rd, Dola died. Paul went back to Provo to attend her funeral. He returned to the same hospital four months later, on Aug. 28, for heart surgery. Also, a few days later, on Sept. 5, he returned again to the Provo hospital to visit his son, Brett, who was there for a kidney removal. Here are the journal headings below: DOLA'S STROKE LUKE'S APPENDIX BURSTS DOLA SPEAKS PAUL'S NAME TWICE PAUL'S HEART ATTACK MANY VISITORS TAVISH'S BIRTH DOLA DIES PAUL'S BI-PASS HEART SURGERY BRETT'S KIDNEY SURGERY -- Don Blackburn, son - - - - - - - - D O L A ' S S T R O K E February 3, 1990, Sat., partly cloudy Mom was going shopping in the Toyota pickup, so I removed the fuel pump as it was plugged.
