Description

Billy Sunday birthplace and Cory Family Cemetery- William (Billy) Ashley Sunday famed evangelist, was born here on his grandfather Cory's farm on November 19, 1862. Here are buried 17 Cory family members, including Sunday's mother, Mary, his brother, Albert, and grandparents, Squire and Mary A. Cory. Sunday's father, a Union army casualty, is buried in Missouri. Sunday attended a one-room school 1/2 mile west of this spot, and continued on at Nevada High School. He was a professional baseball player when he chose to enter the ministry. A dynamic, fiery orator, he drew record crowds in Iowa's towns and the nation's largest cities. Sunday died on November 6, 1935 and is buried in Chicago.
