Description

William Holland was born enslaved near Haydensville, Kentucky, in the mid-1820's. Before the Civil War, he worked as a field hand in Maury County,Tennessee. In 1864, Holland joined the Union Army as a private in the 111th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops (USCT). After the Civil War, William Holland and his regiment helped create the Stones River National Cemetery. Holland lived at the cemetery for a year, then in 1867 moved to his own property just down the road. When William died he could have been buried in the National Cemetery, but instead he requested to be buried on his own property. Holland's grandson, William Harlan, Served in WWI and was buried next to his grandfather in 1979.
