Description

The Oaks Burial Ground holds a significant place in the history of Queanbeyan, serving as the first burial ground in the town. The earliest records of the site date back to the 1830s, where it was a paddock adjacent to "The Oaks" homestead. The burial ground was utilized for burials between 1838 and 1846, before the establishment of the Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery. It is believed that no headstones were present in the burial ground, making it difficult to determine who is buried there. Although the burial ground was closed in 1846, it had one final burial in 1863. An unknown Indian juggler was buried in the cemetery on April 8th of that year, marking the final interment in the burial ground. During the time when the burial ground was in use, Oaks Estate was part of New South Wales. However, in 1912, the Commonwealth acquired Oaks Estate, making it a part of the Australian Capital Territory. As time passed, the exact location of the burial ground became lost to memory. It wasn't until April 21st, 1991, that the site was rediscovered by a back-hoe operator who was digging a storm-water trench in a driveway at 9 Florence Street, Oaks Estate. The operator stumbled upon skeletal remains, which were later confirmed by an anthropologist from the Australian National University to be 150 years old. Through this discovery, it was established that the site was, in fact, The Oaks Burial Ground. Today, the burial ground remains a vital piece of Queanbeyan's history, serving as a reminder of the town's early beginnings and the importance of preserving historical sites for future generations to come.
