This cemetery was originally named Union Cemetery named for the Union soldiers buried there, however the first burial was of Ada Greene in Feb/March 1856 prior to the Civil War and so could have been called Greene Cemetery until the Civil War. The name Steele came into play from Chauncey Steele who was a celebrated Civil War veteran buried there.
