Description

Also known as Long Pond Cemetery. Stone situated in the Cemetery reads: Stanhope Cemetery Here lie the people of the past. Deep within this ground are over 160 years of history buried with ancestors of islanders today. Courageous first settlers of the early 1880's they worked long and hard to carve farmland out of forest. Now Bouver, Lawson, Auld and other pioneers lie buried in this secluded spot. American sailors rest here too, brought to a quick death in the Yankee gale of 1851. This savage autumn storm wrecked their ships and cast them on the sands of the north shore. So tread lightly on this ground, move carefully around for you walk where others lie, the people of the past.
