Description

Westerham (Oistreham) is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and a board in the church records the names of every vicar of St Mary’s since 1278. The earliest parts of the present building date from the 14th century and it has been added to and modified many times over the years. The Church registers record the baptisms of General James Wolfe (the victor of Quebec who was born in the Old Vicarage) John Fryth, who worked with William Tyndale to translate the Bible into English – and was martyred for his work, and three of Sir Winston Churchill’s grandchildren. All were baptised in the 14th century font, as have been as many thousands of local residents https://www.stmarysheritagetrust.org.uk/ .............................................................................................. I have taken photos of graves that I know will not be able to be transcribed. They may be the only record of these headstones online and hopefully at some point I will be able to identify more of them. I did try to photograph every stone and luckily recorded this Churchyard when it was fairly clear of grass and nettles. It has now been left to be overgrown in places for the insects and wildlife to flourish. I have already in the past year identified a few Unknown plots using records in the Kent Burial Archives as well as referring to a previous survey of this Church made by the North West Kent Family History Society (of which I am a member) in 1993. There are some photos of stones in this Churchyard on the website "Grave stone photos". There are also some burial records on the Kent OPC Online Parish Clerk as well as full records on FindmyPast.
