St Joseph's original church was opened February 1864. This historical church was demolished in April 1961 to make way for the new St Joseph's church, which opened 29 August 1965. The new church was built over some of the graves of Upper Hutt's earl settlers. All headstones were removed in 1970 and a memorial plaque installed on the outside wall at the back of the church, with a sacred grassed area left as a tribute to those buried in the churchyard. Original graves date from 1871 to 1981 but the plaque dates from 1877 to 1991.
