Description

This cemetery is listed as "Sanders Cemetery 5-24" in the book, "Sumner County Cemetery Tennessee Cemetery Records," published in 1981 by Margaret Cummings Snider, Joan Hollis Yorgason. Located at the entrance of Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville. Traveling south on Sanders Ferry Road, turn left after Drakes Creek Marina at the sign to the park. The cemetery is on the left, or the lake side of the road, fronted by a wood rail fence. Cemetery & surrounding tract formerly owned by James Sa(u)nders, a prominent landholder who operated a Cumberland River ferry here, and also conveyed land for the Drake's Creek Meeting House (Methodist) which stood nearby. Substantial portions of this and the Daniel Smith (Rock Castle) tracts, once separated by Drake\'s Creek, were flooded by the impoundment of Old Hickory Lake in the 1950s. This cemetery is closely associated with the Smith Family Cemetery at Rock Castle, where markers to both James and his second wife, Mary (nee: Smith) Donelson Sanders, are now located. Both are said to have been originally interred in Sanders Cemetery, although one or both graves may have been removed to Rock Castle.
