The Historic Salisbury National Cemetery is the site of the Confederate Prison of War camp for Union Prisoners. It is located on railroad street just to the southeast of downtown Salisbury. There are more than 11,700 unknown Union graves of prisoners who died while being held. These graves are buried in slit trenches. The cemetery is now closed to new graves except for secondary graves of the spouses of those buried there. There are several large monuments to the soldiers of Pennsylvania and Main. An monument to the unknown burials is a central part of the cemetery. New burials are placed at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex which is across town on Statesville Blvd. at the VA Hospital.
