The earliest graves in the Russell Cemetery date from the late 19th century. This cemetery holds the remains of at least three Civil War veterans, including John Little, Joseph Edmonds, and William White. Edmonds and White both served with the 24th Infantry. In 1898 Russell Cemetery achieved the unwanted notoriety as the target of a grave robber, Charles B. Heimark. At least three bodies were stolen, two of which were found in a medical school in Burlington, Vermont. The third body was discarded nearby. --Rutherford County Cemeteries Driving Tour
