Description

Wootton Bassett Cemetery was opened in 1871. Additions were added to the cemetery in 1934 and 1962, using the site of an adjacent former allotment. Burials have taken place in Wootton Bassett cemetery since 1872. The cemetery is divided into consecrated and non-conformist sections, with areas for adults, children, and children under 7 years. The gates and railings are marked with the name of the blacksmith who cast them, Mr J. Smith of Wootton Bassett. In the centre of the cemetery, where the Garden of Remembrance is now, there were two chapels, consecrated and non-conformist, constructed back to back. The chapels were demolished in the 1980s when they became uneconomical to repair. Plans for the Garden of Remembrance on the site of the old chapels were initiated in 1985 at the suggestion of former mayor and Royal British Legion stalwart Ken Scott, a D-Day veteran. A Wellingtonia, an old giant redwood tree, stands behind the remembrance garden. The tree was probably planted in about 1872 when the cemetery was opened. The old plans certainly reveal a circular path at that point in the cemetery, suggesting that the spot was earmarked for a feature tree early in the design process. In the Cemetery there are three Commonwealth war graves from World War I and four from World War II. Scanned burial records are indexed and searchable on the Town Council website https://www.woottonbassett.gov.uk.
