Description

Rochester Cemetery "Cemetery of Natural Beauty" Rochester Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Shawnee County. It was founded in 1854, the same year the City of Topeka was founded. It was chartered by the state in 1870. Many of the tombstones mark the graves of Pioneer Kansans with names familiar to area historians. The Rochester atmosphere is indicative of its long history because of the shade of the big, old trees along the drives and walks. Blooming shrubs and plants throughout the cemetery brings beautiful color around Memorial Day. Located high on rolling hills north of the Kansas River, there is excellent drainage and the sandy clay soil helps prevent drainage and seepage problems. The cemetery is a landmark of the area. Twenty-five acres of available space figures in new development plans. New plantings are being made and grave sites plotted at the present time. Trees and shrubs will be planted to continue the present shade and beauty For a tour or more information visit or call our office. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday
