The Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission opened December 4, 2006. This cemetery was dedicated in 2006 and is administered by the Texas Veterans Land Board. The current size of this cemetery is 75 total acres which have up to 25,000 plots for burial. Before the expansion of this cemetery, the initial phase of development contained 31 acres and 6,190 gravesites. The Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery is the second Texas State Veterans Cemetery to be built and run by the Texas Veterans Land Board, under the Texas General Land Office. The cemetery will be expanded as needed and will eventually be capable of providing a final resting place for more than 25,000 Veterans and family members.
