Description

An old Indian cemetery named after the Taylor Postoak an early family of Creek Indians. Sometimes the name of the cemetery and even the Indian family is spelled Postok. The first person said to have been buried here was Phoebe Postoak April 30, 1871 - November 22, 1886 in Sand Springs, Tulsa County, Oklahoma Daughter of Taylor and Molea Postoak. She died at the age of 15 and was buried near their original log house. Her tombstone is there. In 1889, five-year old Nettie Howard, daughter of John and Mary Howard died in a wagon while in route to the '89 Land Run. The parents went to Taylor Postoak's house to ask for help in finding a burial place. Mr. Postoak told them they might bury the child beside his fifteen year old Phoebe. Thus began the Postoak Cemetery according to Tulsa Annuals - January 1973. Volume 1, Page 4. As September 20, 2015, I took a picture of and transcribed every stone in the cemetery. A significant number are totally unreadable. I compared my transcriptions to findagrave records and 2006 partial survey of the cemetery by Tony Rockafeller. The cemetery at least as of 2015 was not being regularly maintained and grass in places was nearly 4 feet tall. Here is a strange story with my personal experience. The Postok Cemetery is sometimes called Sparky Cemetery where it is reported that orbs or balls of light move about in the cemetery and in the woods behind. I found an actual Sparky tombstone on my fourth and final visit here. While the stone is clearly old, I wonder if the name was a recent addition. Ken Hunt
