Description

Address: Cemetery Road Pekina SA 5431 Gazetted in December 1880, the Pekina Cemetery is in the Government Reserve that was set aside in 1875, when the township of Pekina was surveyed. Covering an area of almost 5 acres, the original cemetery reflected the optimistic potential of the farming district. In July 1882 a South Australian Government Land Grant for the cemetery was issued in trust to Michael Duffy, John Kinnane, Michael C. Kenny, Edward Hanna and Thomas Orrock. Early burials in the South Eastern corner of the cemetery date from around 1876, with earliest monuments dating from 1879. Whilst being a Public Cemetery, it is a fine example of the predominantly Catholic Cemetery with over 93% Catholic burials reflecting the Irish Catholic heritage of the area. Non Catholic burials were conducted at the western end of the cemetery until 1922 after which they were encompassed with the present cemetery. The present cemetery covers and area of 2.2 acres and is under the control of the District Council of Orroroo/Carrieton.
