Description

Cemetery LC012 in Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission Database. This magnificent cemetery is on the green in the center of Little Compton, next to the Congregational Church. This is what most people think a New England cemetery looks like, but it is not a typical Rhode Island cemetery. Little Compton was originally a Massachusetts town and its early structure, particularly the town green, was quitessential Massachusets. It became a Rhode Island town in 1746. Rhode Island towns had many small churches, most without cemeteries. Massachusets and Connecticut towns were actually parishes of the church in that town.
