Oak Grove Cemetery

This cemetery was purchased June 15, 1901, one acre and twenty three rods, V shaped for $12.30/100. This cemetery is the oldest cemetery in this area for African Americans. Many of the headstones are hand made with names chiseled by hand. This cemetery was closed to African Americans for a time after Camp Peary took over. Every time personnel changed at Camp Peary, permission had to be granted for African Americans to use the cemetery. The cemetery is now owned by Oak Grove Baptist Church. The present site reflects the heritage, spirit and unity of Black people when the walls of segregation were still standing.
