Description

What is known geographically as "Mt. Calvary Cemetery" is actually a combination of four separate cemeteries: Mt. Calvary - near the front entrance; Mt. Olive - beginning at midpoint of cemetery to rear; Fishers Hill; and a potter's field behind the rear section of Mt. Olive Cemetery. Mt. Calvary Cemetery's gps coordinates: 36.82595, -76.3222. "Fisher's Hill, together with Mount Olive and Mount Calvary cemeteries and a potter's field of unmarked graves, are the final resting places for a number of notable local African Americans, including educator I.C. Norcom, child advocate Ida Barbour and newspaper columnist Jeffrey Wilson. Burials at the cemeteries date to the 1860s and the exact number of people interred is unknown. Estimates range from between 8,000 and 35,000. The 13-acre burial ground, collectively known as the Mount Calvary Cemetery Complex, has long suffered with poor drainage, overgrown shrubs and trees, sunken graves, damaged headstones, vandalism and even feral dogs."
